Mel-o-toons
I found a bunch of these in the $1 bins at WalMart and they have stories like tall tales (Paul Bunyan, etc) and other kids stories. They are all from the late 50's early 60's and are quite charming once you get past the scratchy sound and "aged" feel of the graphics. I'll scoop up those bargain bin videos if they have "name brand" cartoons that I don't have, but tend to avoid them when they're about nobodies. I didn't realize UPA was involved in some of them (which I got from the Web site you cited). Of course, that was during the transition period, when they started as the studio of Gerald McBoing-Boing (yay!) and wound up the one that made the Dick Tracy TV cartoons (boo!). But maybe I'll take a closer look.
I was surprised to see (again, from that Web site) that Thornton Burgess was doing original stories for them. I was reading his books then (maybe a little earlier, actually), and had no idea he was still alive. Quack, Don |
