Relevance of strips

That's not unusual. Most strips that have been around as long as Doonesbury are boring. It can be quite a grind, being funny every day for years. BC, for exmple, was wildly hilarious at first, but got fairly boring after a few years. As time went by, it got more boring, until it eventually became aggressively boring as Johnny Hart let religious polemics get in the way of the fun. (Not that I necessarily get apopoplectic about religious content -- Stan Lynde, for example, has the same religious religious orientation, and lets it show in his work, but his strips were always fresh and entertaining -- of course, he wasn't trying to get a laugh every day.)

Doonesbury, of course, has the additional problem that a lot of people are put off by its political orientation. But that can't be the whole problem, because Mallard Fillmore takes a very different political point of view, and if you ask me, it's been boring since Day One. At least, Doonesbury doesn't hit the reader over the head with politics.

In my non-humble opinion, the most interesting thing that's happened in Doonesbury in this century was B.D. getting his leg shot off in Iraq. For weeks, there was fresh character development in a guy who had always been nothing but a right-wing foil for the others. The strip was interesting, and never more so than when he was on-stage. But it eventually fell back in the same rut, and I stopped following it again.

So yeah, others feel pretty much the same. Funny from time to time, but no longer worth putting much time and effort into keeping up with.
